Build e-commerce recommendations, search and analytics with vectors at GDG DevFest

I had the pleasure of leading a workshop at GDG DevFest 2024 on November 8th, on building advanced e-commerce features, and it was an absolute blast! My goal was to show developers how to tackle complex challenges with practical solutions that don’t require endless coding or hefty infrastructure.

‍

We kicked things off by diving into complex queries— searches like "popular blue t-shirts around $50." Using a combination of structured and unstructured data, I demonstrated how to deliver accurate, context-aware results. It’s all about leveraging techniques like vector embeddings and smart re-ranking to make search results feel intuitive.

I walked through how to create personalized shopping feeds based on temporal data. For instance, how do you serve up products at just the right time, like sweaters when it’s starting to get chilly? It’s simpler than you think when you use behavioral and time-based insights effectively.

Finally, we tackled scalability, deploying everything on Google Cloud. I showcased how these solutions can handle production-level traffic while staying cost-effective. The focus was on keeping things practical—lightweight implementations that scale effortlessly.

By the end of the session, the feedback was incredible. The Devs appreciated the hands-on approach and left with tools they could immediately apply to their projects.

If you’re curious about the techniques I shared or want to chat about your own e-commerce challenges, let’s connect—we'd love to help you build smarter, more scalable solutions!
